Water quality

Integrated Environment and Water Management (IEWM)^

The purpose of this 4-weeks´ residential course is to provide people working with environment and water resource management with a wide-ranging appreciation of the tools available in water and environment management as well as the value, limitation and use of these tools in practice. In this way, the course will provide the participants with a background for assessing water quality, water resources and other environmental issues and allow them to use these in an integrated way in environmental management.

The target group of participants is environmental practitioners, water resource managers and others working with environmental issues, taken from middle managers and middle-to-senior administrators who are connected to public authorities regulating or administering water and environmental services and or working with the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.

Topics

  • Water resources assessment
  • Data analysis and presentation
  • GIS integration
  • Integrated Water Resources Management
  • Environmental Management
  • Individual working sessions and project work

Data, Collection, Analysis and Validation

This 1-day course gives a practical introduction to data assessment, validity checking and work flow from sampling to analysis to data presentation. The course also touches on the environmental interpretation of sample data. The course is designed for professionals working with water quality data, either as authorities or as consultants.
The course constitutes a natural part of the general MIKE BASIN course. In general, the course is cross cutting for all water quality related training activities. The course does not include hands-on exercises.

  • Choosing sample stations
  • Sample representativeness of, for example, river or lake
  • Sampling and transport to the laboratory
  • Choosing the right laboratory
  • Errors in data reporting
  • Pitfalls and troubleshooting

RIAM^

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has developed into a universal tool for planning. It has become mandatory, in one form or another, in all industrialised countries and many developing countries. The 3-day course provides professionals with an overview of how to understand an EIA, understanding the EIA structure and learn how to carry out an EIA. Each participant receives a copy of the RIAM software and is trained in using it. This course is cross cutting for all infrastructure and resources projects.

Topics

  • Fundamentals of EIA
  • EIAs and legislation
  • Pit-falls
  • Learning the steps of EIA
  • The RIAM package
  • Using RIAM in case studies
  • Hands-on exercises
