The course focuses on the contents of an EIA, the various steps and especially the ability to perform a scoping of components involved in an EIA. The Course includes training in scoping and mitigation and will use the Rapid Impact Assessment Matrix ( RIAM) tool, developed at DHI.

RIAM is widely used in a number of countries, research into expanding the system is ongoing, and new software is being developed for the method. DHI has used RIAM for EIA studies in Malaysia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

The course will consider the traditional EIA methods, their value & limitation. The EIA process will be covered, then the RIAM concepts and method will be covered in detail, as will the RIAM software (RIAM Basic). There will be in-depth group exercises on scoping and RIAM to provide practical understanding of the system. As the course is very intensive it is designed as a residential course to allow for continuous inter-action and the execution of in-depth group exercises using the method.
