Shoreline management can be regarded as the part of coastal zone management dealing with existing and planned development in coastal areas and its relation to actual and potential coastal erosion and flooding, as well as to the planning of coastal protection and sea defence schemes.
An increasing number of conflicts in coastal areas are caused by the extensive development of industry, infrastructure and tourism development projects, which occupy increasing fractions of the natural coast leading to coastal erosion and beach deterioration. Many other human activities also deprive our shores of a natural supply of sand, such as river regulation works, sand mining in rivers and the ongoing sea level rise. Proper shoreline management is therefore important.
DHI has carried out numerous projects related to shoreline management. DHI has provided technical assistance and training to coastal authorities in the form of delivery of coastal and data management software and associated training, input to actual shoreline management planning and coastal protection strategies, as well as the issuing of coastal management guidelines and input to coastal zone management planning.
DHI has held courses in shoreline management and environmental management and issued papers and a book: Shoreline Management Guidelines.
Finally, DHI has made hydraulic designs for coastal protection projects, artificial beaches, beach parks and marinas.
